During a week-long residency, Progress Theatre will present The Burnin', an a cappella musical inspired by two American nightclub tragedies occurring decades apart in Mississippi (1940) and Illinois (2003). Straddling time and space, The Burnin’ is an imaginative exploration drawing on these disasters as a narrative inroad to examine central themes of identity and agency. The piece addresses sociopolitical complexities of race, gender, class, community, legacy, and freedom during times of survival. Additionally, four to five workshops will be facilitated.
