Swan Lake: South African choreographer Dada Masilo’s Swan Lake re-imagines classical ballet through an African eye, combining African dance, classical ballet, and music hall theater. Overlaying a tale of societal pressure, homophobia, and segregation onto the famous story, Masilo takes a clear stance on women’s rights against the backdrop of Africa’s ongoing struggle with AIDS. Multiple partners are dedicated to presenting this powerful work grounded in a heartfelt understanding of humanity; the project represents Masilo’s company’s first U.S. tour.
