UMS will present the Japanese butoh dance company Sankai Juku in October 2015 in a multi-day residency. During that time, they will perform “UMUSUNA: Memories Before History” and participate in related engagement activities. Roughly translated as “the place where humans connect with nature”, UMUSUNA is a sharply designed ritual that investigates themes of eternity. Nine male dancers engage in a dialogue with gravity, as continuously falling sand—symbolizing time itself—piles up onstage denoting life as a vertical line. Performers connect to the living world via earth, air, fire, and water, represented by vivid colored lights.
