Contemporary Arts Center

Okpokwasili will perform “Bronx Gothic” for the Contemporary Arts Center in our Black Box theatre. At the intersection of theatre, dance, and visual art, it depicts the relationship between two girls on the verge of adolescence in the 1980s outer-borough New York City. Their lives are revealed as furtive, sex-soaked notes are passed between them. Okpokwasili’s performance pushes against extremes and reverberates with potency that threatens to break the body in this partially-true chronicle of one woman’s past. “Bronx Gothic” reveals a dark and powerful tale of sexual self-discovery, the body in transformation, and the humor, love, and even terror that accompany it.
