Presenter Survey - How Should NDP Evolve?

As noted in an earlier blog, NEFA’s National Dance Project (NDP) is approaching our 20th anniversary in the 2016-2017 season. We are working with Metris Arts Consulting to evaluate the comprehensive historic and forward looking impact of NDP on the dance landscape in the United States, and to consider how NDP can best support artistic and presentation practices in the years to come.
 
Our earlier appeal to dance artists for participation in a research survey resulted in over 500 responses and a wealth of data.  We now are asking U.S. dance presenters to participate in a brief companion survey (25 minutes). Through our research efforts, combined with information from this survey, we hope to identify possible ways in which NDP might strategically evolve over the next five to ten years, and to uncover strategies for strengthening the dance ecosystem for all.
 
This survey is open to all entities who present dance in the U.S. outside of the commercial sector. This includes 501(c)3 nonprofit theatres and university-affiliated performance spaces, but also tribal entities, dance artists/companies who self-produce in rented venues or via swaps with dance artists in other cities, museums that present dance installations, spaces that present dance as one of several arts disciplines, and community spaces that primarily serve non-arts functions. The dance presented may be of any aesthetic genre or tradition.
 
If you represent an organization that presents dance, even occasionally, and operates outside of the for profit sector, we’d like to hear from you. You are not required to have a history of presenting National Dance Project work, and knowledge of NEFA and NDP is not necessary. The survey will be available through March 11, 2016.

Our work with Metris Arts Consulting involves a two-part research project–a retrospective impact evaluation of NDP and a field scan of the larger dance ecology. The scan explores the larger current support systems and challenges related to the creation and touring of dance works. Once completed, Metris’ research report will be publicly available at metrisarts.com and nefa.org, and we look forward to sharing the results in person at future dance and grantmaking convenings next year during NDP’s anniversary season.
