CABD will develop ink — the final installation of the identity trilogy. Gestural vocabulary and time travel will collide and draw on the rhythmic and ritualistic history of African diaspora social dances and traditions. ink will combine dance, music, body, and instrument to portray hip-hop as a cultural phenomenon and social justice platform. Musicians Joey Oakley and Wilson Torres will compose a percussive score of African and hip-hop music with sound design by Jonathan Pratt and DJ OP. Riffing on the comic superhero trope prevalent in heroic American folklore, CABD will anthropomorphize and examine hip-hop’s political influence and response to injustice through the African American lens. Estimated artist fee: $25,000/ performance (plus housing and shipping), $40,000/ week (plus housing and shipping).
