/peh-LO-tah/ is the latest dynamic performance work by the award-winning poet-performer Marc Bamuthi Joseph. The complexities of culture and the sport of soccer are conduits for both global pride and global corruption, a theme that gives depth to the movements on stage. Joseph draws on his experiences as a child of Haitian immigrants, playing the game in the United States, and his affinity for the sport as chronicled in journals of his travels to World Cups in South Africa and Brazil. His spoken-word poems and charismatic storytelling form the base of a theatrical experience featuring live music and choreography inspired by South African and Brazilian styles, and soccer techniques.
