Uk’u’x Ulew, “Essence of the Earth,” is an environmental wake-up call in the form of an allegory inspired by nature. The work was a community effort, with the support of many artists, farmers, health practitioners, and spiritual leaders.Through the main characters, Wind, Earth, Fire, and Water, the natural elements express their energy and the essence of Mother Earth through song, music, and movement to the rhythm of Grandmother Moon. Transnational industries and extractive activities inspired this production, such as rampant gold, silver, and nickel extraction. Uk’u’x Ulew asks viewers to conserve the earth while it denounces environmental pollution and all acts that harm the cosmos.
